The Labrador Society is a social organization of expatriate Labradorians living in and around
Ottawa, Ontario. We were formed in 1991 at the suggestion of Labrador Senator William Rompkey.
It is a strictly non-partisan, all inclusive, association of Labradorians and those who wish they were. The original aims and objectives of the association were "to help or encourage the promotion and visibility
of Labrador arts and artists." It has become a focal point of the the Labrador community not just in
the immediate Ottawa area but from far and wide. Our annual reunions are attended by visitors
from as far away as the Maritimes, the southern United States, western Ontario, eastern Quebec
and, of course, Labrador. The annual Christmas party on Parliament Hill is also a time for expatiate
Labradorians to get together to share a celebration and renew acquaintances. Occasionally there
will be mid-summer picnics.
Donated Labrador arts and craft items are displayed at these events and sold as fundraisers or given out as prizes at our reunions. A highlight of the annual reunion is the auction of a fully stocked Grub Box that is "made apurpose" for the event. Each one being a uniquely crafted peice of work. Proceeds from the auctions and raffle draws are donated to worthy causes in Labrador communities such as books for local libraries, historic and memorial plaques in Labrador communities and, of course, assistance to promising Labrador artists, crafters, singers, and musicians.
For annual events visit our Events Calendar page. Also check out our Photo Galleries and leave a message in the Guest Book. Information on membership is
available on the Members Page. Visit our Fundraisers page and check out our list of sponsors and donors without whose support our Society could not function.
